Cutting it to this, and making users validate their install via Steam likely saved a lot of time and effort on Konami’s part. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a pretty big game, and its PC version would have likely required more than one disc to fit all of the install information. This is odd in a number of ways, though it does make sense if Konami wished to save some money. The core gameplay is heavily based on the mechanics present in Metal Gear Solid V with much the same equipment from the single-player game making its way in to Online. That 8MB is just an installer file that will load Steam onto the user’s PC, according to the sources. Metal Gear Online 3 supports 16-player online battles for the PS4, Xbox One and PC versions and supports 12-player online battles for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. One user even posted an image showing the data, which seems to confirm that while there is an entire DVD in the box, only 8MB of information is on there. Some of the most notable titles on the console either saw release on the PS2 or were eventually remastered for the PS3 or PS4.
